Endorphins for Orphans

It is true that I often misspeak when trying to communicate ideas to other people. Recently during a small group meeting I was trying to express the fact that when we laugh, our body releases endorphin’s, and that overall, we are happier the more we laugh. Instead of relaying these sentiments, I instead said that when we laugh, “dolphins are released”. knowing, as I was hearing it come out of my mouth, I tried to correct myself, and blurted out “orphans!” (Que loud sounding buzzer) Nope, that was still the wrong choice. The correct word I was looking for was endorphins.

This got me thinking, What if we started a, lets call it, campaign to raise some money for orphans or the disadvantaged in our areas. Its really easy and all it requires of you is to laugh, hard! (also your money).

Step 1:

Choose how much money you are going to give. It could be a dollar, fifty cents, fifty dollars (for you big spenders out there).

Step 2:

Choose a charity. Ideally it would be a charity in your own community, Someplace where you can see your donations being put to use. We are more likely to see the value in our sacrifices when we see the results of them in our own community. Also, poor college students don’t count, believe me, I’ve tried…

Step 3:

Choose a visible place to put your money for you and others to see. It could be on your night stand, your living room table, next to your TV while you are watching parks & Rec. (It doesn’t have to stay in the same place… although if you are like me, if you keep moving it, you will keep forgetting where you put it.)

Step 4:

Laugh! This is the easy part. every time you laugh, remember to put the already chosen amount in your “Endorphin’s for Orphans jar. When the jar is full, donate it to the already chosen charity.

Step 5:

Repeat, and encourage others to do the same!

Whats the point you ask? Well besides giving to others who are in greater need than our selves, and the whole thing Christ said about taking care of the least of these, many of us are greatly blessed and we often don’t take time to thank God for it. Yeah sure, we have our problems, and really we are all basically poor these days, but it seems like too many times I only thank God for the big stuff. Why not take time to thank Him for the small stuff, like laughter and the little moments of joy that slip by unnoticed.

Every time I laugh, I want to be reminded that God takes pleasure in my joy, especially when my joy is in Him, and why not thank Him by giving to others!

What do you think? Who’s in?
